چکیده

A manufacturing process has been developed for a microelectrode array that can he used for stimulation of the visual cortex to provide an effective sense of sighf to the blind. The first prototype merges sixteen 316L stainless sfeel electrodes on a 4x4 array. Several arrays can then he assembled together in a mosaic configuration to cover a large portion of the visual area. To reduce brain injuries while maximizing the quality of the phosphenes, fhe electrodes must he shaT, thin (50 pmdiameter), separated 400 pm apart and have stimulation sites located at 1.5 mm under the surface of the cortex. Using electrical discharge machining followed by an electrochemical surjbce freahnenf, it has been shown that it was possible to reach such geometrical ratios at this scale. This technique can be combined with electrodeposition of porous platinum to create low impedance stimulation sites. Encapsulation and biocompatibiliry of the array are also discussed.

Design and Fabrication of Plasma Array Antenna with Beam Forming

In this paper, the design and implementation of plasma antenna array with beam forming is discussed. The structure consists of a circular array of plasma tube enclosed in a unipolar UHF band monopole antenna. Beam forming is possible by stimulated plasma tubes. The combination of the above antenna with plasma excitation controller makes a beam forming smart antenna. An experimental model in UHF...

Effects of Cortical and Peripheral Electrical Stimulation on Brain Activity in Individuals with Chronic Low Back Pain

Purpose: Neuroscience studies suggest that Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is associated with central sensitization, and maladaptive reorganization of the brain; this introduced a new target for LBP treatment. Studies revealed that cortical and peripheral electrical stimulation can be beneficial in regulating brain neuronal activity. However, there is a scarcity of evidence to support the effects ...

Effect of locus ceruleus phasic electrical stimulation on responses of barrel cortical cells to controlled mechanical displacement in rats

Behavioral and electrophysiological evidences have shown that locus ceruleus (LC) is involved in different tasks including modulation of sensory processing and shift of attention. In the present study, single unit responses of barrel cortical cells was recorded following controlled mechanical displacement of the principal and peripheral vibrissae in adult rats (100 trials of 200 µm deflection f...

Flexible parylene-based microelectrode arrays for high resolution EMG recordings in freely moving small animals.

We present the development, fabrication and in vivo testing of a minimally invasive microelectrode array intended for high resolution multichannel recordings of electromyographic (EMG) signals. Parylene C was chosen as the structural substrate for its mechanical, electrical and physical properties. In particular, the device is extremely flexible. This provides a highly conformal coverage of the...

Design and Fabrication of A High Density Metal Microelectrode Array for Neural Recording

We report a new fabrication technique for realizing a high-density penetrating metal microelectrode array intended for acute multipleunit neural recordings. The microelectrode array consists of multiple metal (Permalloy, Ni80Fe20) shanks projecting from a silicon supporting bulk. Neuron recording sites are located at the tip of each shank. The average distance between recording sites is 50 μm. ...
